Deadlines discipline us... sometimes too much

You get assignments, but they're not the type we have in school. " The sketches should be done by Wednesday!", "The final is due Friday!". When I first started my internship it was exciting to hear that there is nothing due tomorrow, or even the day after. You are just working, working and working. The challenge is that you have to plan your time yourself, you have to plan when to be ready with progress to show it to your boss, how to not have an all-nighter before a presentation. And there will be a client meeting, maybe not the following week, but sometime in the near future.
In school we are always complaining about noy having enough time, we are complaining about having strict deadlines. The deadlines that are arranged so that we have something to do for every single class are helping us because they're giving us a time limit, our time is planned for us. You know that next class you will be asked to show your progress is and if it's not there... The real discipline starts when you have to do it all yourself with a big meeting or deadline ahead of you and no deadlines in between.
